Backing Up Certificates in Microsoft Management Console (MMC)

Import to MMC
 

  1. Open MMC (Start > Run > MMC). Open the Certificates Snap-in.
  2. Select Local Computer Account when prompted.
  3. Under Certificates select and the Personal folder.
  4. Right-click the Personal folder and select All Tasks. Select Import.
  5. Find the ".pfx" file you saved previously and import the certificate and private key into the MMC.


Export from MMC and Back Up the Certificate and Private Key
 

  1. Open MMC (Start > Run > MMC). Open the Certificates Snap-in.
  2. Select File. Select Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. Select Computer Account when prompted. Click Finish. Click OK to go back to the main MMC screen.
  4. Under Certificates select and expand the Personal folder.
  5. Locate and right-click the certificate for the correct domain.
  6. Select All Tasks. Click Export.
  7. The Export wizard will appear. Follow the instructions and make sure you do the following:
         a. Select Export Private Key.
         b. Deselect Enable Strong Encryption.
         c. Select Include All Certificate in Chain if Possible.
  8. You will receive a pop up box stating that you have successfully exported the certificate after completing the wizard.
  9. Save the ".pfx" file in a secure location.
